Fundada en abril de 1985 por iniciativa de la Asociación de Directores de Escena de España, se definió como revista a partir del número 16 (abril 1990). Su periodicidad es trimestral, pero se editan además números monográficos con carácter especial. Por lo que respecta a sus contenidos, la Revista ADE - Teatro tiene un carácter fundamentalmente de estudio, análisis, información y debate sobre cuestiones relacionadas con el teatro español e internacional. Como secciones fijas cuenta con: Editorial, Entrevista, Informe, Artículos, Libros y Noticias. Incluye además un texto dramático, generalmente inédito o no traducido nunca al castellano. Entre sus líneas editoriales se encuentran también la publicación de estudios monográficos sobre diferentes metodologías y técnicas teatrales, la realidad teatral en diferentes países o autonomías, etc.
